Artemide develops a modern and efficient lighting concept for CML’s new headquarters in Karlsruhe

CML Europe GmbH is a leading global player in the manufacture of printed circuit boards and sourcing solutions for the automotive industry. Its technical expertise, innovative products and consistent reliability ensure the company enjoys an excellent reputation and consumer confidence worldwide. These core values are also reflected in CML’s new headquarters in Karlsruhe. Flawless cooperation by the team of architects from BAU4 with Vitra and Artemide has created the company’s new head office. Covering 4,750 square metres, a dynamic two-storey, freestanding building has emerged that hovers over an open parking level with 60 parking spaces for employees. The office space is arranged around a two-storey atrium. Down to the last detail, the overall concept embodies the modern, open and international corporate culture of CML Europe GmbH.

The centrepiece of CML’s new office landscape in Karlsruhe is an impressive blend of flexible co-working spaces and plenty of places where staff can retreat. The open light-filled areas invite an exchange of creative ideas. Great for communication, stimulation and inspiration, the workplace is transformed into an environment for generating innovative ideas and effective solutions through constructive teamwork. At the same time individual office solutions and freestanding discussion booths, which can be used as think-tanks or phone boxes, provide space for privacy, customer meetings and uninterrupted concentration. Generously integrated into a two-storey atrium, work and relaxation go hand in hand. On the ground floor, like a marketplace, there is a lounge, a cafeteria and a communications centre where people can stay a while.

When it comes to wellbeing at work, lighting plays a crucial role. The right light creates a pleasant, inspiring atmosphere and encourages a productive workflow. In these Karlsruhe headquarters, a professionally implemented lighting concept is combined with daylight, ensuring glare-free light and making an harmonious addition to the architecture. Artemide’s lighting planners have developed an integrated lighting concept that is ideally tailored to the various zones and spaces in CML’s new building. With their unique symbiosis of high-quality design, innovative technology and maximum energy efficiency, Artemide’s lights are the first choice for high-performance aesthetic lighting design.

Tagora 970

A good example of this is the Alphabet of Light system in the co-working area. This modular system comprises basic geometric modules that, when combined, form letters, numbers and symbols in a language of light. On the ceiling of the office landscape, Alphabet of Light portrays the conductor paths of a printed circuit board, reflecting the corporate design of the CML brand. Thanks to their huge light output, the LED configurations illuminate the entire office space equally brightly, making separate workstation illumination superfluous. In parallel, the round Tagora 970 pendant lights bathe the conference room in stimulating light. The fixtures in grey aluminium perfectly match the office’s modern industrial design. A perfect contrast to the workplace illumination comes in the energy-efficient A.24 Circular pendant lights. With their atmospheric illumination, they create an ambiance for taking a break and relaxing. Their circular frames cleverly pick up the form of the acoustic panels and light chimneys and round off the overall image perfectly.

With their extraordinary light output and low electricity consumption, all Artemide lights are extremely energy efficient and fulfil the building project’s lofty ambition. Because alongside its modern look, the main focus of CML’s new headquarters is on efficiency and sustainability. With its own photovoltaic panels on the roof, geothermal heating and a heat recovery system, the building is as self-sufficient as it can be when it comes to energy efficiency.

The new building stands out for its huge flexibility and energy efficiency and in doing so reflects the DNA of the CML brand. The experienced team comprising BAU4 architects, Vitra and Artemide have managed to create flexible spatial structures and efficient workspaces that, with their open design and ingenious lighting concept, provide a pleasant, performance-enhancing working environment that gives both employees and customers a sense of well-being.
