Naturally inspired

Easter is marked by the rustling of foil and other packaging. But nowadays many consumers are asking if this is really necessary. At ARTEMIDE, sustainability is the yardstick used to measure the perfect art of packaging, combining three disciplines: aesthetics, function and environmental friendliness.
We are also charting our course to more sustainable lighting by using innovative production techniques, environmentally friendly materials and well-designed packaging. Polyethylene (PE) is gradually being replaced by recycled material or even cardboard. In 2023, ARTEMIDE used around 2,693 tons of materials in its production and packaging, of which 29 percent were already recycled. We also look for regional added value: 97 percent of our suppliers come from the EU, of which 72 percent are Italian partners. Short routes equal lower emissions. Together with our suppliers, we intend to substantially increase the percentage of recycled and recyclable materials over the years ahead.
And there’s more: 71 percent of our energy comes from renewable sources. In our Pregnana Milanese plant, 19 percent of the electricity we use comes directly from our own photo voltaic cells, saving some 184 tons of CO₂.
Sustainability has long been part of the approach at ARTEMIDE. Our corporate philosophy “The Human & Responsible Light” puts humankind and the planet at the heart of everything we do, underpinned by certifications ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001. We have always focussed on outstanding design that will stand the test of time, and this approach has won us dozens of awards. The product design team is currently working on making lamp bodies from recycled plastic. We are also testing sheet aluminium made from old drinks cans. The drive for greater sustainability never stops.

If ecology is the art of clever improvements and many small steps, it takes us straight back to the quest for the perfect packaging. Packaging that is robust enough to withstand knocks while creating as little waste as possible. A beautiful box may even end up on a display shelf rather than in the bin. The ideal solution is thus something that doesn’t look like packaging or that goes on to enjoy a second life.
