Elegant lighting

Once they were a luxury that very few people could afford: chandeliers were a sign of wealth and high birth, transforming splendid Palazzi after dark into grand venues for partying and dancing. Even now, they add an air of majesty, and their production requires consummate skill. For years, the world’s largest chandelier hung in Vienna City Hall. Made in 1878 for the Paris Exhibition, it weighs over three tons and is more than five metres in diameter. Today’s record holder is twice the size. The chandelier in the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque weighs twelve tons and is adorned with around 15,500 dimmable LEDs and Swarowski crystals.

One thing has not changed: chandeliers continue to lend a touch of glamour, even within the home. Festive table lighting is very much in vogue. From majestic to minimalist - ARTEMIDE offers a whole range of unique luminaires designed to create a very special atmosphere.

How well El Porís fits with modern interiors is shown by the reception room of Château Bélair-Monange . It is dominated by a sculptural chandelier that has a wonderfully light and airy presence. With its E27 sockets, it offers full freedom in terms of luminaires selection.

The equally minimalist Zephyr with its modular elements can be adjusted as wished to suit its surroundings. Its cylindrical diffusor made of transparent, hand-blown glass guarantees glare-free light. The same applies to Veil, a contemporary interpretation of the classic chandelier, where the light is dispersed by a high-tech diffusor. Like a delicate veil, it drapes over the eleven arms of the chandelier, which appears both opulent and minimalist at the same time.

There is now a whole family of Unterlinden, designed by Herzog & de Meuron. Its two and a half metres of cable means it can always be configured anew. A ring chandelier lends the luminaires a festive note. The individual luminaires made of die-cast aluminium or bronze play with oxidation, which is halted by a clear varnish to create unique pieces within the series. With nh, a glass sphere is combined with a hanging bracket and a movable ring of brushed bronze to form the basic element of this family of luminaires . This flexibility results in a multitude of positioning options. The design of nh is simple but at the same time extremely elegant and poetic. The materials used are especially high quality and combine tradition with innovation.

Mercury, a modern classic, is formed of airborne pebbles which float beneath the ceiling as illuminated clouds and create impressive constellations: chandeliers of a new age.
